Menzie C’mon now. You’re just jealous because he’s able to make a lot more money than a college professor without actually having to do anything. Nice work if you can get it.

    1. Moses Herzog

Aaaaaaawwwww…….. but see…….. Menzie can get that job very easily. But he refuses to check a very important box on the job application form: “Are you willing to sell your soul and LIE for the almighty dollar? YES/NO “

Menzie is jealous for another reason. Menzie’s CV has lots of citations all type in black and white Times New Roman with 12 point font.

Moore’s resume has really large letters and lots of wonderful colors. You see he used crayons to compose it!

Yea but did you know that Stephen Moore was the architect of NAFTA? That is what he told Brad DeLong in their little appearance. In addition he and Lawrence Kudlow gave us the late 1990’s boom because they supported a reduction in the capital gains tax rate!

Moore sees a parade, runs really fast, and pretends he is leading it!

“Stephen Moore is the Distinguished Visiting Fellow for Project for Economic Growth at The Heritage Foundation.”

AND he headed the WSJ oped pages on economic gibberish in addition to writing the usual National Review nonsense. Why hasn’t he received a Nobel Prize?!

Foxconn pulls a bait and switch on Wisconsin:

    https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/foxconn-shift-focus-away-from-blue-collar-manufacturing

They will still created 13 thousand new jobs but they will not be manufacturing TVs. No Foxconn wants a research center. I bet the intercompany contract will read that the Taiwanese parent will pay cost plus 5% so all IP created will be owned offshore. Now why is this not “stealing American IP” or whatever nonsense PeakTrader used to rant?

” Ideology has all-but overtaken science in the world of peer-reviewed academic literature, according to a sting operation of sorts undertaken by three left-leaning yet independent academics.”

“Aero Magazine editor Helen Pluckrose, mathematician James Lindsay, and Portland State University philosophy professor Peter Boghossian detail at Aero a year-long project in which they submitted “outlandish or intentionally broken” papers to leading peer-reviewed journals to test the journals’ rigor and biases.”

“This process produced twenty papers, including one about observing “rape culture” among canine behavior in a dog park; one claiming “the reason superintelligent AI is potentially dangerous is because it is being programmed to be masculinist and imperialist using Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Lacanian psychoanalysis”; a “feminist astronomy” paper arguing the science of astronomy is “intrinsically sexist”; and even a chapter of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf rewritten with “fashionable buzzwords” to make it about feminism.

The authors add that their work presented “very shoddy methodologies including incredibly implausible statistics,” claims not warranted by the data,” and “ideologically-motivated qualitative analyses”; advocated “highly dubious ethics” such as “punishing white male college students for historical slavery by asking them to sit in silence in the floor in chains during class”; and incorporated “considerable silliness” such as feigning confusion about “why heterosexual men are attracted to women” ……..

“Yet most of it was taken seriously. Ultimately, they succeeded in getting seven of their twenty papers accepted, four of which were published online. Seven were either resubmitted after requests for revisions or awaiting review. Only six of the twenty were rejected entirely as “fatally flawed or beyond repair.”

“Ideology has all-but overtaken science in the world of peer-reviewed academic literature..”
none of this occurred in what anybody would consider a hardcore “science” field. these were in the social sciences. the innuendo of this statement is very misleading.

Moore is not in academia, so he has no incentive to publish or perish, in Journals.

But while we’re on the subject……..

“The political registration of full-time, Ph.D.-holding professors in top-tier liberal arts colleges is overwhelmingly Democratic. Indeed, faculty political affiliations at 39 percent of the colleges in my sample are Republican free—having zero Republicans. The political registration in most of the remaining 61 percent, with a few important exceptions, is slightly more than zero percent but nevertheless absurdly skewed against Republican affiliation and in favor of Democratic affiliation. Thus, 78.2 percent of the academic departments in my sample have either zero Republicans, or so few as to make no difference.”

With such bias, peer review citations are not a good measure.

sammy: As the Republican party becomes ever more the party of no-nothings, then it should be expected that Democrats would dominate in presence in academia, and increasingly so.

Not clear being a Democrat would make one more likely to find fault in a test for heteroskedasticity. In other words, you have no idea what academia is like.

You’d never guess, by the way, what party the fathers of New Keynesianism belong to…

Liberals and Conservatives have different personality traits that draw them to certain professions. I would not assign academics to be superior to many other occupations, as you seem to do. There is truth to the saying: “I would rather be governed by 1,000 people picked randomly from a phone book than 1,000 members of the Harvard faculty.” More common sense, real world experience, and modesty.

        1. Menzie Chinn Post author

sammy: I don’t think I have written anywhere that academics are superior to other occupations. If you can find an instance where I have, please tell me. Personally, I rank bartenders, short order cooks, and seamstresses higher. But that’s just me.

Strange that Trump chose Harvard grad Jared Kushner to bring peace to the Middle East. Or that he would allow such an elitist to serve as a senior adviser to serve without a security clearance. You would think he might have given that job to a high school graduate from Alabama or at least someone with a GED. What was he thinking?
More head scratching: more Yale grads serving in Trump administration than in any previous administration. That should make Sami happy since he keeps repeating the phone book quote from William F. Buckley, the elitist’s elitist from Yale.
You would think more Trumpers would have followed Ivanka’s lead and would have attended a nice conservative trade school like Georgetown. More renowned academics from Liberty or Bob Jones wouldn’t hurt either.

“Moore is not in academia, so he has no incentive to publish or perish, in Journals.”

Why bother to write something intelligent when right wing babble gets you a column at the National Review!

    3. pgl

Sammy – do you ever check the details of the fluff you link to? First of all the author is from Brooklyn College. I live in Brooklyn and this school is not exactly on par with Columbia University or NYU.

More importantly, when it comes to economics, it says there is one Republican for every 5.5 Democrats. Yes even the know nothing party can get a few Republicans such as the very smart and honest Andrew Samwick. Now I’m sure if you read his writings, you’d be very unhappy with what he has to say. Heck even Harvard’s Greg Mankiw has blasted almost every aspect of Trump’s intellectual garbage.

  7. sammy

    Menzie,

” I don’t think I have written anywhere that academics are superior to other occupations. If you can find an instance where I have, please tell me.”

Your quote from 1 hour ago: “As the Republican party becomes ever more the party of no-nothings, then it should be expected that Democrats would dominate in presence in academia, and increasingly so.”

    1. Menzie Chinn Post author

sammy: Are you dense? That statement isn’t an assertion of superiority of academics. It’s a statement of comparative advantage of people interested in knowledge, working in a knowledge industry.

      1. sammy

        Menzi:

“That statement isn’t an assertion of superiority of academics. It’s a statement of comparative advantage of people interested in knowledge, working in a knowledge industry.”

        LOL.

  8. sammy

    Menzie,

It’s not that you’re not superior in intellect or study, you are. It’s just the BIAS, and lack of real world experience. You can out econometrics me, no doubt. But, have you ever run a small business? Do you have to survive next month depending on revenues and expenses?

    1. pgl

“have you ever run a small business? Do you have to survive next month depending on revenues and expenses?”

I loved it when people complained that Obama never made payroll. Actually he made payroll for the Federal government which employs over 4 million people. Look – if you do not want us to suggest your team has stupid people, just stop writing such incredibly stupid things.

BTW Wilbur Ross during the shut down failed to understand what it meant when a Federal employee did not have the funds to even buy food. But hey – he is on your team!

      1. noneconomist

Same tact was used against John Glenn. He never met a payroll. Which, obviously, made him unfit to do much of anything.

        1. pgl

When I lived on the Uppity East Side, my favorite bar had a few Republicans who would say the darndest things. One dude who made a small fortune ripping people off as an eye specialist who used to brag about making payroll. I asked him how many people worked for him. One – the woman who ran his office. Yes doctors can be arrogant know it all types who could never pass an undergraduate class in business or economics. But he “made payroll”.

I’m warming to Samie’s idea: no Ivy Leaguers as President or in the Cabinet. No more elitists from Penn, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, et. al.
We need more guys and gals who know how to get things done. Where are the grads from Texas Tech, UNLV, Idaho State, UAB?
Remember: Putin, after all, is an LSU grad: Leningrad State University (Go Polar Bears!). That should show how and how far state university grads can go. And he’s met plenty of payrolls too.

    1. pgl

You left out Brooklyn College’s business school. Never heard of it? Neither have most people from Brooklyn. But it seems Sammie’s new guru teaches there.

      1. noneconomist

Sammie may also be hitting another nail squarely. Who needs all these intel experts anyway? What good is studying history, economics, international relations if you don’t believe the right way. No reason you always have to look to the ivies or the service academies for the most well educated and well trained candidates.
You can learn a lot by listening to frequent callers like Jim Ed from Waxahachie, who knows everything there is to know about nuculear weapons in Eyeran, the shortcomings of John Mayonard Keens, and who should be the starting quarterback at SMU.
That’s also true for Billy Don from Bogalusa. He can talk your ears off about why we need more off shore oil drilling for national defense, getting out of NATOE, and firing Ed Orgeron if he don’t win more at LSU.
Under Trump, guys like these should be the future of our intel communities.

2slugs If federal indictments are unsealed in Feb, my projection will have been right on. If the start is Mar or Apr, still I will have been right enough. If they never unseal them then I will have been dead wrong. But how could what’s sealed not be unsealed? Sealed cases (not all are indictments) are rising at the rate of 5K per month. As of Dec the total is 70K.

    1. noneconomist

IF????? You’re going from “Read my lips, tons of explosive indictments coming” to IF? Willis, what ARE you talking about?
(Good weekend, however, to hedge a bet, especially a sure thing).
