Russia has shut down the Amnesty International office in Moscow. I am proud that for 17 years, 1988-2005, I was the Faculty Adviser of the JMU Amnesty International chapter. They have been shutting down the Russian offices of some of these other groups as well. How surprising.

We have our fair share of Putin bots trying to claim Russian troops are doing nothing wrong. I wonder how they will respond to the growing evidence to the contrary. Oh yea – the titles read APPARENT war crimes so they will seize on the single word – apparent. After all – they do whatever Putin tells them to do.

JohnH has it figured out: don’t trust the government or the media, and wait for verification from the Pentagon. In JohnH world, that apparently (?) makes perfect sense.

      1. AndrewG

I get the skepticism (all wars have propaganda coming from all sides) so I don’t want to be too critical of those who are trying to be careful in a good-faith way.

But my god, the evidence is horrific. It may not amount to “genocide” (a tough definition as always) but “war crimes” is not a stretch by any means. Look at all the residential districts in rubble. It looks like Syria.

And then there are those who are trying to be “careful” in a bad-faith way.

Just horrific. It’s hard to imagine that there are human beings living through that.

      2. JohnH

It would nice if those outraged by alleged Russian behaviour were half as I as incensed by similar US behaviour.

Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard: “It is a damning indictment that nearly 20 years on, virtually no one responsible for alleged US war crimes committed in the course of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars has been held accountable, let alone prosecuted, and yet a publisher who exposed such crimes is potentially facing a lifetime in jail,” she said.”
        https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2021/10/how-the-us-pursuit-of-julian-assange-is-a-distraction-from-impunity-for-war-crimes/

Much of this has to do with asymmetric information: mainstream media sensationalize reports of bad Russian behavior but have showed little interest in reports of US war crimes, knowing that revealing too much could end up with diligent reporters being jailed.

Instead of the usual hypocrisy, commenters here would do well to judge US behavior according to the the standard they apply to Russian behavior.

        1. pgl

similar US behaviour? Maybe The Mỹ Lai massacre which did greatly anger a lot of Americans.

But come on troll. There is NO excuse for your incessant excusing of Putin’s war crimes. By now – it is apparent that you lack a soul. That you lack a shred of integrity on any issue has been well known for a long time. But you appear to have zero compassion for the citizens of Ukraine.

          1. JohnH

How often do past events have to repeat before they be considered a fundamental characteristic of a nation’s military behavior.

In fact the genocide of Native Americans and slavery are “historical” manifestations of a behavior that has carried forward to the present with disturbing frequency: Philippine genocide, nuclear obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, carpet bombing of Vietnam, and recent atrocities and war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, where wedding processions and funeral processions were droned in a pointless and futile war.

But Americans presume their right to righteous indignation when others behave in a similar manner! And they presume to ignore the human rights abuses perpetrated by their own government in their name and demand accountability only when others misbehave.

How about getting outraged at US military war crimes for a change?

          2. Noneconomist

Hey John: for someone preaching righteous indignation over well known historical misdeeds, you seem quite unconcerned about those happening now. Strange, since your sermonizing lacks any compassion for those suffering now while constantly refusing to call out the “alleged” (your new favorite word) atrocities of a war criminal. Also missing in your brief history is any mention of previous Russian atrocities.
Sorry, make that alleged Russian atrocities: you know, famine, gulags, purges, ethnic cleansing.
Apparently your re-education camp was not as thorough as it should have been.

        2. pgl

Amnesty International is a noble organization which of course you are blatantly ignoring when it comes to Putin’s war crimes. So do not lecture us with what they have rightfully said about events in the past. You have ZERO standing here. NONE!

        3. pgl

I marched against the Vietnam War. I never saw JohnH doing that. I marched against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I never say JohnH doing that. This latest comment from JohnH is beyond insulting. But hey – he is Putin’s poodle so what do we expect.

          1. JohnH

I marched in Washington DC in early 2003. Only 40,000 people showed, which was disappointing since my wife and I hadflown across the country to participate. I also participated in marches on the west coast. My home town, a relatively small city, turned out as many protestors as Seattle.

Most Americans were totally indifferent to the American occupation of Iraq and to the hundreds of thousands killed there…but they sure do squawk when Russia does something similar to a country that is strategically insignificant to the US. American propaganda had a lot to with people’s indifference to the killing in Iraq and outrage to that of Russia in Ukraine.

Personally, I think both countries should be judged according by the same standard. Interesting that the US never joined the ICC, isn’t it?

          2. Noneconomist

Let me JohnH for a moment. JohnH allegedly flew cross county with someone he says was his wife. He/they allegedly marched against the Iraq invasion. He also allegedly marched on the west coast where he allegedly led his protesting neighbors, an allegedly large group rivaling marches in Seattle.
He’s very upset that Americans can’t confess their past sins, their indifference to indiscriminate killing of innocents.who, but who but JohnH, even knew muchabout the mistreatment of Native Americans or about the modern effects of slavery?
That makes him mad—real mad—when they accuse Russians of alleged war crimes since those crimes can only be alleged until the Pentagon weighs in officially. But since JohnH says we can’t trust anything the government says, the obvious bloodshed in Ukraine will remain alleged until Americans realize their indifference to past tragedies.
Until then, alleged mass rapes, civilian massacres, kindergarten bombings, et. al. will be just that: alleged. JohnH will let us know the truth. Who else could?

        4. AndrewG

You can call out past American atrocities without false equivalence with a Russian attempted annexation of a foreign country that involves leveling entire cities.

          1. Noneconomist

Or, in Johnland, you can attempt to divert attention from reality by pontificating endlessly on past events while ignoring the present. That way,he hopes we won’t notice how forked his tongue really is.

        5. AndrewG

What President Zelenskyy saw in Bucha | 60 Minutes
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sc4hW21UC0

Do you think you could watch this without turning it into a crusade against the hypocrites of the world? Do you think you could give the people who were killed that basic respect? The people in the mass grave?

        6. Barkley Rosser

          JohnH,

Sorry, but last time I checked US did not decapitate people and burn corpses after raping small children in either Iraq or Afghanistan. A lot of civilians got killed by bombs, which is also happening in Ukraine. But there are war crimes in Ukraine that are simply way beyond anything Americans have pulled. Or do you want to throw doubt out there about Russians actually doing these things that increasingly are being discovered and revealed?

      3. JohnH

It would nice if those outraged by alleged Russian behaviour were half as I as incensed by similar US behaviour.

        1. Noneconomist

Nice touch: quoting Amnesty International while ignoring Dr. Chinn’s Amnesty International link on Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
But hey John. Remember your own advice: while waiting for, uh, Pentagon confirmation, don’t believe the government and certainly don’t trust the thousands of infotainment correspondents on the ground. They’re all in cahoots, right?
In the meantime, you might to try some ivermectin to cure your myopia. It might also knock your own blatant hypocrisy right out of you.

        2. pgl

“Instead of the usual hypocrisy, commenters here would do well to judge US behavior according to the the standard they apply to Russian behavior.”

OK – what was done to the Indians was horrific but it pales in comparison to what Putin is doing. But no – you have decided what Putin is doing is AOK. No it is not. But I’m SO glad you care about the American Indians but wait – you did not protest against Vietnam? Then all your hollow excuses for your master (Putin) ring hollow. Admit it – you simply do not care what is happening to Ukrainians as you are the chief hypocrit of all time.

        3. AndrewG

Instead of acknowledging horrendous war crimes, you are acting like a teenager, huffing about hypocrisy and bringing up Julian Assange.

so far all “battles” have been within civilian areas, the ukr. setting up “law’s” in a residential area is a war crime.

so we get an inflation number and we get a allegation of chem weapons……

      wag the dog!

Their standard response to information that they don’t like or that doesn’t support their narratives is simply to deny it. Trump is a classic example, anything he doesn’t like is called “fake news” – and his brain dead followers trust him.

I may not always agree with New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) but here he is spot on:

“He’s f—— crazy,” Sununu said of Trump earlier this month at the annual event, known for its roasts of politicians and other figures. “I don’t think he’s so crazy that you could put him in a mental institution,” he added. “But I think if he were in one, he ain’t getting out.”

‘The US and Britain say they are looking into reports that chemical weapons have been used by Russian forces attacking the Ukrainian port of Mariupol.’

Of course JohnH will find someway to let Putin off the hook for this war crime too. After all – that is what he is paid to do.

Vladimir Putin has said his country had “no other choice” but to invade Ukraine and that what he has called a “special military operation” was aimed at saving people in the Donbas region….Its goals are absolutely clear and noble,” the Russian president said. Putin said that “we had no other choice” except to take military action against Ukraine and “there is no doubt that we will achieve our goals. On the one hand, we are helping and saving people, and on the other, we are simply taking measures to ensure the security of Russia itself,” Putin said.

Either he is mentally deranged or he is clearly lying assuming there will be people too stupid to see past this self serving BS. Of course we have seen our Putin bots buy into some of the most transparent lies from Putin so why not.

For whatever it’s worth I saw some discussion of Bellingcat on PBS NewsHour and it struck me as quite an impressive outfit. Haven’t checked them out yet, but plan to.
