Southwest Border Encounters, thru April

The title at Zerohedge screams “Illegals Believe Trump Is Going To Win So They’re Surging The Border Now”. I looked for data, but found none, so I checked CBP:

Source: CBP, accessed 23 April 2024.

April’s reading is lower than corresponding readings for 2023 and 20222, and matches 2021. This is not the picture I expected reading the Zerohedge article.

It is true an encounter does not mean “one person” encountered; however, unless there is a systematic bias in the number of people in any given group encountered by CBP, then one can infer that incoming individuals is less — not more — than in the past.

Fake Tyler Durden’s ‘evidence’ was a NY Post headline and Twitters from the usual right wing suspects. Zerohedge does not need any stinking evidence.

Zero Hedge picked up a second-hand report, through Modernity News from the NY Post. We know what the NY Post is, but Tyler Durden poking around Modernity News, so what is it?

Here are traffic details from semrush:

      https://www.semrush.com/website/modernity.news/overview/

The largest recent source of traffic to Modenity News is Drudge. The largest destination coming from Modernity.News is YouTube, followed by Porn Hub. (Tyler’s is a lonely life.)

Traffic at the site has been falling in recent months, and was never very high.

So, Tyler swims in the low-traffic end of the NYPost/Drudge/Port Hub pool of fact-baseless journamalism. Impressive.

The main thing is that it can pick up revenues. There will be right wing idiots who will click so they can see “evidence” of what they already “know” is true. Those people actually don’t care whether the BS they are reading has any grounding in facts – they just need “confirmation” that what they believe is “true”.

Those also happen to be the same idiots who complain that everything is too expensive – not recognizing that the lack of labor (immigrants) that they so crave would make for some very real inflation.

But don’t try to show them real data to the contrary of their narratives. Because any such data is manipulated and part of a conspiracy. How do they know that? – well, it contradicts their favorite narratives so it must be a lie.

Maybe if older people listened to younger people more we wouldn’t have to keep going down these dark roads over and over and over again. Do we know many college aged people worried about Mexicans crossing the border?? And if we talked to grade school aged children how many would say they are worried about Mexicans looking for a safe home. a job, a white picket fence, and their tall glass of lemonade??

I know this data is slightly dated, but didn’t know about it until the last couple days. The graph showing the differentiation between the movement of the prices of new cars vs the movement in prices of old cars is very fascinating. Especially fascinating to those of us who may be getting a new car in the next couple years.
    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/used-car-prices-fall-again-in-april-down-nearly-17-from-pandemic-highs-162758735.html

Speaking of which I have some friendly advice to those who have an old car and want to “stretch it out” and own it awhile before getting a new one. First, almost all motor oil additives/stabilizers are garbage. They just don’t work. So just make sure you’re using good (the correct) motor oil, don’t use motor oil additives.

A FEW fuel additives do work, but only about 4 fuel additives on the market will work on older/high mileage cars. Those are the ones with “P.E.A.” (Poly Ether Amine). The two I would lean towards are “Gumout” and another product named “Techron”. My car, a Japanese car from 2007, with now over 100,000 miles, was starting to make a metallic tinging noise. I got the “Gumout” and followed the directions very closely, and now the tinging sound is gone. So I believe in these fuel additive products with the “P.E.A.” component. They are only like $9 to $15 and I think they can add more life to older cars.

That’s a “heads up” from old Uncle Moses. And personally I would stay the hell away from a product named “SeaFoam” (or really ANY fuel additive that does not have “P.E.A”. some consumers rave about “SeaFoam”. But in Uncle Moses’ personal opinion “SeaFoam” is garbage, and will create headaches for car owners. Word to the wise.

In the wake of her recent heated confrontation during a House Oversight Committee meeting, Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has stirred fresh controversy by posting an upside-down flag on her social media account. The post came accompanied by a call for Americans to follow suit in solidarity with Justice Samuel Alito and the Donald Trump.

That is Marjorie for you. If someone else acts like a traitor, she calls on everyone else to do the same. MAGA.

But maybe you did not notice our host’s graph has a different labeling from the graph you choose to display. Not that we do not trust you but you do have a habit of lying to us 24/7.

      https://www.voanews.com/a/encounters-apprehensions-expedited-removal-border-enforcement-explained-/7065786.html

      Apprehensions
CBP defines an apprehension as “the physical control or temporary detainment of a person who is not lawfully in the United States, which may or may not result in an arrest.” Migrants — often in large family groups — who cross U.S. borders outside official ports of entry requesting asylum are temporarily apprehended and eventually expelled from the U.S. back to their countries of origin.

In its monthly reports before March 2020, CBP listed apprehensions individually. But after March 2020, when the Trump administration imposed the Title 42 health order, CBP created a new category called “encounters,” which combined apprehensions and expulsions.

      Encounters
Migrants who are either apprehended and expelled from the country or were apprehended but allowed to go through routine removal proceedings, which include seeking asylum while in the U.S., are categorized as encounters. Cesar Cuauhtemoc Garcia Hernandez, a professor at the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University and an expert on migration studies, told VOA that apprehensions are a type of encounter.

Gee Bruce, since you are way more of a creepy uncle than I am, I would have thought you would relate to such an antiquated term as “white picket fence”. I thought since Menzie knows that even though I am slightly younger than him, I was raised by a Depression era father, and he knows I am only sorta/kinda creepy, he’d let me get away with using such a bygone term. But Deputy Bruce-ie Fife has saved Menzie the trouble of taking me back behind the woodshed.

          Lyrics:
          I look at the T.V.
          Your America’s doing well
          I look out the window
          My America’s catching hell

I just want to know which way do I go to get to your America?
I just want to know which way do I go to get to your America?

          I change the channel
          Your America’s doing fine
          I read the headlines
          My America’s doing time

I just want to know which way do I go to get to your America?
I just want to know which way do I go to get to your America?

          Go west
          Go west
          Go west, young man
          Go west
          Go west
          Go west
          Go west, young man
          Go west

          Where is my picket fence?
My long, tall glass of lemonade?
Where is my VCR, my stereo, my T.V. show?

          I look at the T.V.
          I don’t see your America
          I look out the window
          I don’t see your America

I want to know how to get to your America
I want to know how to get to your America
I want to know how to get to your America
I want to know how to get to your America
America, America, America, America, America, America

U.S. Border Patrol Apprehensions and Title 42 Expulsions at the Southwest Border:
    Fact Sheet, December 19, 2022

    https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R47343

‘In FY2022, U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) apprehended more than 2.2 million foreign nationals (aliens) crossing into the United States illegally between ports of entry, the largest number in its history. The apprehended migrants were either placed into removal proceedings (under Title 8 of the U.S. Code, immigration law) or expelled from the United States (under Title 42 of the U.S. Code, public health).

Prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, all apprehended migrants were processed under Title 8 and placed into removal proceedings, where they could apply for asylum or other humanitarian protections. On March 20, 2020, in response to the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invoked authority under Title 42 to limit entry of certain foreign nationals to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, including those intending to apply for asylum and other humanitarian protections. The order directs Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to expel certain
unauthorized migrants at land borders back to the country from which they arrived, or to their country of citizenship.’

Take a look at Figure 1. A large share of “encounters” during 2021 and 2022 were expulsions not apprehensions. My apologies for taking some time to find this CRS Fact Sheet but we know Bruce Hall’s mission in life is to spread MAGA misinformation rather than present reliable data and analysis.
