On August 25, Canada announced a broad set of retaliatory tariffs, hitting U.S. dairy hard. Our northern neighbor announced that as of September 8, U.S. cheese entering Canada will face a 25 percent tariff, while milk products, cream, and whey products will see a 50 percent tariff.

Wisconsin exported $3.99 billion in agricultural, forestry, and food products in 2025, $1.38 billion to Canada alone, of which $468 million was accounted for by dairy products (DATCP).
Mr. Trump has threated counter-retaliation against Bombardier, a Canadian aircraft manufacturer which has a considerable employment footprint in Wichita, KS.
Picked up gasoline today at $3.45. Not many stations had that price, most in my area were at $3.57, another was $3.79 and another even $3.99. That tells me that $3.45 will be gone by tomorrow (Weds) lunch time. The more interesting question is, where will it be by December?? No one seems to think Venezuela supplies will take effect very soon, and both Russian and Iran supplies are getting shorter by the day. And how does the Britain boycott of Israel effect things?? the latter probably a very very small ripple in international waters……. but one never knows when an entire nation’s goods are boycotted by a major economy such as Britain’s.
If I was Carney I would be tempted to OPENLY laugh at the orange abomination. Laugh at trump from the world stage podium. Because if Carney sticks to his guns trump will swallow his own tongue in panic, the same as he did after China’s response on earth metals and agriculture imports. The orange primate will $hit in his Depends diapers.
Methinks this will lead to even more consolidation in dairy farming in Wisconsin – couple of months ago – I talked to an older dairy farmer who told me he was faced with borrowing millions to increase the size of his herd and modernizing his milking equipment or just selling off his herd and retiring. This latest round of Trump/WI GOP trade war will lead to another round of retirements. It is sad to me – because in the face of climate change – a small dairy farm can be a great way to do sustainable, resilient farming. But – boys you gotta chase yields and try and make it up on volume – !! (BTW – Biden admin expanded the program to do more conservation acreage/sustainable farming – all that funding was cut with Trump.)
By the way – our cognitively declining president – who is talking about being pulled from the rubble at 9/11 – has continued to escalate his war on Iran. I am seeing gasoline around $4 and diesel for $5.50. If the insanity continues diesel going to $6 to $6.75. Just in time for harvest season.
This guy is not just asleep at the wheel (witness his many press conferences where he falls asleep) – but mentally incapable of driving – we need to have a conversation about taking his keys away.

Canada already had restrictions and tariffs on US dairy products:

Bruce Hall: The fact that Canada already restricts imports does not preclude additional tariffs. Just like there being a Sec 232 tariff on aluminum doesn’t preclude another tariff on aluminum. Wow.
So, Brucie wants us to focus on the fact that Canada had tariffs on some U.S. cheeses. That’s the important thing. Not the war-of-choice in the Persian Gulf and tariffs across a broad range of imports, both of which have cause a painful rise in inflation. Not the re-emergence of measels in the U.S. because of a stupid crusade against modern medicine. Not the shortage of construction, food-processing and healthcare workers because of mildless harassment of immigrants. Not the shortage of housing. Not the effort to overturn democracy. Not the obvious mental and emotional deterioration of the felon-in-chief. No, no, let’s all focus on the fact that Canada already had some tariff.
