Today, Mr. Trump tweeted about four congresspersons of color:

….viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back…

It needs to be emphasized that this statement is part of a continuing Trump program to characterize non-caucasian Americans as “un-American” or “foreign”, even when born in the United States. Of “The Squad”, Ayanna Pressley was born in Chicago, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  was born in NYC, and Rashida Tlaib was born in Detroit. Only Ilhan Omar is not native born American (Somalia). There is a long tradition of America welcoming (intermittently) immigrants and refugees from foreign shores, but as we know, Mr. Trump does not subscribe to that view (unless they come from Norway, apparently).

If you are inclined to give Mr. Trump some slack, allowing that he just might not have realized these individuals were born in the United States (after all, I truly believe he didn’t know Puerto Rico was part of America when Hurricane Maria struck), the fact that he has stated a desire to eliminate birthright citizenship points to a darker intent. From NYT:

President Trump said he was preparing an executive order that would nullify the long-accepted constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship in the United States, his latest attention-grabbing maneuver days before midterm congressional elections as he has sought to activate his base by vowing to clamp down on immigrants and immigration.

“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years, with all of those benefits,” Mr. Trump told Axios during an interview that was released in part on Tuesday, making a false claim. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.”

As a matter of record, Mr. Trump is wrong in his characterization of the uniqueness of the US and birthright citizenship; there are at least 30 countries that also grant some form of birthright citizenship. See also this post.

Jews who don’t want to get stomped on by the Governments need to speak up NOW or STFU when their turn comes up. They voted for Netanyahu in droves and sing Netanyahu’s praises while he gets hit with self-evident corruption charges and he slow dances cheek-to-cheek with donald trump on the ballroom floor.     Menzie You might be taking Trump out of context. My reading of the tweet is that Trump was telling them to go back to their districts, which he believes are crime infested sh*tholes. But in some ways my interpretation of his tweet is even worse than yours. Trump isn’t just saying that those four congress persons were un-American, he was saying that there are entire regions of the country that are un-American. Only white, conservative, rural parts of the country are truly American in TrumpWorld…except of course high rise buildings in mid-town Manhattan. If Trump wants to find truly depressed areas with high rates of poverty, crime, drug addiction and suicide, then maybe he should tour some of those rural areas of TrumpLand. The violent crime rate in Kansas is 413.0 per 100K. In New Jersey it’s 228.8 per 100K and in New York it’s 356.7 per 100K. And in ruby red Alabama it’s 524.2 per 100K. Deeply Republican Alaska has a violent crime rate of 829.0 per 100K (including violent crimes committed by the Palin family). And I’m sure he doesn’t want to risk his life in that crime infested socialist swamp called the People’s Republic of Vermont with it’s alarming violent crime rate of 165.8 per 100K. Trump isn’t just hinting at non-whites as being un-American, he’s saying that blue states and blue districts are un-American and crime infested. Trump needs to quit watching those old Charles Bronson Death Wish movies from the 1970s.

        Yes, that part of the tweet referring to Congresswomen (plural) who came from countries (plural) supports your interpretation, although there would have been some truth to his tweet if he had used the singular rather than the plural. Somalia is pretty dysfunctional. OTOH, it’s not like his Administration is a shining example of competence.

        Trump has been strangely silent about his tendency to marry foreign born women who then enjoy a lifetime of benefits and American citizenship for themselves and their parents.

      AOC represents Queens. OK as a resident of Brooklyn – I avoid Queens at all costs. Then again Trump grew up in Queens. So if Trump wants to call his birth place a sh*thole, who am I to disagree?

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

    I await with trepidation and disgust discovering whether, how, and how many Justices will simply ignore this. Amendment 15 was thrown out with Shelby County in one of the most sophistic decisions in Supreme Court history, and we just got Korematsu II, so all bets are off.

      Thanks for reminding of what the Constitution says. We know Trump is an utter moron but isn’t it a requirement that the President knows what the Constitution says?     They’re young, have their preoccupations and let them out. Each of their proposals has to the potential to kill America and turn it Muslim. As long as the democracy is functioning and there aren’t 200 Omars, it’s not going to happen.

This is the time as 2020 campaigns are just now starting up their motors for blog hosts to be vigilant. Blogs still have sway—maybe minor sway after Instagram etc—but they still have sway.

        Maybe I am biased as you have been generous in your treatment of me allowing me to express myself and “vent” on your blog—but I believe you have shown good discretion and judgement on these matters as to what you allow on the blog—-if you smell bad intentions as regards “Zi Zi” and others, I hope you will go ahead and listen to your gut if Zi Zi’s sole intention is stirring people up and creating confusion.

        I have never asked you (nor would I) to get rid of people I have personal barbs with on this blog. Commenter “Zi Zi” falls into another category.

      I’m old enough to remember a Zsa Zsa (Gabor) whose grasp of the English language was pretty tentative. She wore lots of fur and jewelry too.
      You know what they say about those who live in glass houses. If you were born and raised where I was, there would have been plenty of folks keeping an eye on somebody whose name didn’t even appear in the Bible.
      We also kept a good eye on those who crossed themselves when they prayed. THEY were the ones who might take over America and give it to the big guy who lived in that palace in Italy. Over our dead Protestant bodies.

        Trump’s mother immigrated from Scotland, from one of the islands off the northwest where they still speak Gaelic, which I understand was her mother tongue. There also seem to be some questions regarding the way she immigrated. This is part of why he really likes having a golf course in Scotland and is so enamored of Queen Elizabeth, whom he has said his late mother admired, although he rarely says anything about his mother, in sharp contrast with almost every president we have had, most of whom can be found to have said much and at length praising their mothers.

          Trump’s parents’ story was quite common in NY. The Irish-Scots community had a lot of NY men marry immigrants from Ireland or Scotland.

          My father’s cousin married an immigrant Irish woman in the early 60’s.

          There was emigration from the UK and Irish Republic (continues slowly) after WW II, my sister in law was born in Britain, her family connections to Ireland. Her father a WW II veteran of the Royal Army. My father had a friend who we called Scotty and also served in the Royal Army during WW II.

    There are a number of male members of Congress who strongly criticize Trump. Some of these guys are either black, Asian, or even Muslim. But Trump does not lose it as badly as he lost it with these four women. Trump has a real problem when challenged by a strong woman.

    Then again he woke up to the realization that the ICE raiders were welcomed to immigrants who knew their Fifth Amendment rights. The ICE had no warrants and were almost universally not allowed to enter the houses of the people they were supposed to harass. Trump in other words woke up to the realization that he is an utter failure at everything.

    “Go back to where you came from,” pretty much sums up the thinking of lots of Americans, particularly the native ones a couple of centuries ago. You know, the Iroquois Confederacy, the Shawnee, the Cherokee, (who were sent to where they didn’t come from), the Lakota, the Nez Perce, the Paiute, the Shoshone, the Navajo, et. al. And who can forget the special arrangements that sent the Apache to their ancestral non-homeland in Florida?
    Those were also the special sentiments of the natives in this part of California–Nissanan, Pomo, Miwok, Modoc, et. al., who were pushed from their lands with no real place to go back to. Something having to do with gold.
    Don’t recall anyone telling me to go back where I came from: Good thing. The Scots likely wouldn’t want me.

      Heh, your last line made me chuckle. I don’t know, I get the feeling if people in most “tribes” (pun intended) were more like you we wouldn’t be having most of these issues. Your cultural references made me think of the old film “Thunderheart”. I always felt a kinship to the secretly pervy Ray Levoi in that film, thinking he was going to be “Superman” to the girl (IRL Wisconsin born) during and after the motorhome scene with grandma. That’s one of those films the young kids wouldn’t like anymore because they now apparently find disgusting and hate the idea of a “white savior”. “Horrid” even to imagine—whites with empathy to their cause. “Frightening” even…… A person in a position of power wanting to assist in a minority cause…..must feel something similar to getting Ebola I guess……..But I related to that film in many ways, and of course any movie with Sam Shepard counts as “cool” in my book.
