Anybody familiar with the gravity model of trade would be unsurprised that Wisconsin (exports) a lot to Canada.
Figure 1: Wisconsin goods exports to world (black, right scale), Canada (blue, left scale), Mexico (red scale), mn.2017$. Nominal data deflated by BEA deflator. Light orange shading denotes Trump administrations. Source: Census via ITA, BEA via FRED, and author’s calculations.
Notice Wisconsin exports tend to go down during “orange” periods. Anyway, Wisconsin awaits retaliation. A hint of targets:
“steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, electronics.”
Gee, I think Wisconsin has some dairy production…(pretty sure there’s a John Deere factory i Horicon, too).
Thanks, Drumpf!

Well, while the great orange abomination and idiots in red MAGA hats wonder “Why should we care if thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children who are just innocent civilians existing in their own native land are murdered by Russia/Putin everyday??” life just goes on as normal. Or at least it “goes on as normal” if all you ever do is watch FOX News on the TV. The following from Olga Lautman:
“For the third day in a row, NATO continued its unannounced operations along the eastern flank, with the military again operating around Kaliningrad, Poland, the Baltic states, and stretching to Moldova.
And as NATO continued its show of force to warn Russia against attacking a NATO country, Moscow was yet again escalating.
Romania, a NATO country, had already dealt with a drone entering its airspace during Russia’s massive and deadly overnight attack on Ukraine when another one appeared just hours later. This time it was a maritime drone in the Black Sea, spotted just a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project. Romania scrambled two F-16s, and video captured the moment one of the jets opened fire and hit the drone, which officials later confirmed was carrying explosives.
The location is important because Neptun Deep is one of Europe’s largest new natural gas projects and is expected to make Romania the EU’s largest gas producer when it comes online. And this is not the first time Romania has dealt with a drone incursion this week. Just four days ago, another drone entered its airspace and was shot down by a Spanish F-18 conducting a NATO air policing mission.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan took to X to thank the Romanian Armed Forces and pilots for destroying the drone and blamed Russia for the incident. He condemned what he called an “intensification” of these incidents by Russia and said Romania would remain vigilant alongside its NATO allies to ‘repel such challenges.’ ”
But truhmp says NATO is useless. People paying actual attention know who/what is useless. A “leader” who can’t even be bothered to feed his own Navy men.
It sounds like a typical Trump negotiation. He whittles away over and over again until finally you capitulate, and then once you capitulate he suddenly adds additional demands at the last minute, assuming you can’t back away from what you have already agreed.
In this case they had come to some sort of agreement and then at the last minute Trump not only demanded his tariffs, but additionally demanded limitations on Canada’s sovereign right to negotiate trade deals with other countries! No wonder Carney told Trump to go fish.
And to add insult to injury, Trump demanded that Canada waive its requirements for bilingual labeling on products sold in Canada. MAGA hates the cheese-eating French and to have French speakers on Trump’s continent is considered a personal affront.
Trump was demanding they surrender their sovereignty and their languages, making Canada a 51st state in everything but name. Carney walked away.
By the way, Canada has already imported 2,500 Chinese EVs starting in July with tens of thousands more on the way. BYD will be establishing dealerships in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary by the end of the year. Heh, Calgary should be interesting.
You mean Putin is pushing is lackey for redirecting Canadian goods into China and that will help China’s economic system support Vlad. Its always been a con for Drumpf support.
I hear the Canadians are going to close the Our Moose Strait.
Coherence is irrelevant.
Canada is Wisconsin’s largest export market, totaling $7.5 billion in goods and $1.38 billion in agricultural products. Plastics & plastic articles: $566 million Paper & paperboard: $523 million Electric motors & generators: $423 million and $1.38 billion in agricultural products of which the main one is dairy products. Please contact the offices of Republicans Bryan Steil; Derrick Van Orden; Scott Fitzgerald; Glenn Grothman; Tom Tiffany; and Tony Wied; and GOP Senator Ron Johnson and ask why they are destroying Wisconsin’s business? Tom Tiffany is also running for WI Governor on a platform for destroying Wisconsin business.
Wisconsin also imports billions of dollars in goods from Canada, led by industrial machinery, plastic products, fuel and oil, paper products, and wood. These imports face broad baseline tariffs of 25% (with lower rates like 10% on energy), plus a targeted 50% tariff on specific items like motor vehicles, alcohol, and dairy.
Why are Trump and Lutnick intend on destroying Wisconsin’s economy? And beyond the tariffs – no business can plan for the future in such a chaotic trade policy environment. Why isn’t the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) speaking out more about these terrible Trump policies? WMC President and CEO Kurt Bauer says that Canadian tariffs will be “rough on Wisconsin” and have a “very significant impact” on the state’s agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Canada: “It’s a country that doesn’t have a military … they have record high euthanasia rates. And so to think that they’re gonna go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the US, I think it’s foolish on their part.”
So the administration is talking literal military war with Canada now? I think he means that Canada doesn’t have a military the way Trump says Iran no longer has a military.
And euthanasia is now on the table??? Along with the French language. These folks are nuts.
I’m awaiting Rick Striker’s return and his sensible plan for the 5,500 mile wall across Canada.
Well, last month we had the spectacle of UFC wrestling on the White House lawn and today we have Indy Car racing through the streets of DC.
Front row seats are $5,000 and beers are $14. I’m not sure Trump really grasps the free bread and circuses gambit.
And the only beers on offer are Corona and Pacifica — imported from Mexico. I’m not kidding.
