WisGOP Can’t Count

From a statement from WisGOP on Governor Evers’ State of the State address.

“From an economic recession to cheerleading for DEI, Governor Tony Evers has dragged Wisconsin down over the course of his tenure. Wisconsinites know our state can do better than the failed policies and uninspired vision of Evers.” — WisGOP Chairman Brian Schimming

Background

  • Wisconsin’s GDP declined for three straight quarters in 2023. It was one of only six states in America that reported a decline in GDP growth in Q2.

Apparently, WisGOP is unaware of the definition of a recession (and/or who declares recessions at the state level), They are also unable to reconcile the fact that according to the article referenced, only two quarters of Wisconsin GDP had been reported, so it was not possible to have three consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth in 2023.

Here is the data that ahs been available since December 27.

Figure 1: Wisconsin GDP, bn.Ch.2017$ SAAR (blue). Source: BEA, Dec. 27, 2023.

Inspection of current data indicates that there are not three consecutive quarters of negative growth, now that three quarters of GDP have been reported. As of Q3, Wisconsin GDP is 0.5 ppts above 2022Q4 levels.

Other indicators (which WisGOP did not cite) are more positive.

Figure 2: Wisconsin Nonfarm Payroll Employment (dark blue), Civilian Employment (tan), real wages and salaries, deflated by national chained CPI (tan), GDP (red), coincident index (green), all in logs 2021M11=0. Source: BLS, BEA, Philadelphia Fed, and author’s calculations.

The Baumeister-Leiva Leon-Sims WECI index is 0.55 ppts above trend, for the week ending 12/30. Average real GDP growth over the five years up to 2022 was about 1%, suggesting growth of 1.55% for the year ending 2023.

Apparently the GOP is repeating talking points from their incoherent grifter Donald Trump – I’ve been seeing the GOP spew their “the economy is terrible” B.S. on Fox and throughout the right-wing media bubble. In the real world – “Best job market since the 1960s, Best recovery in the G7, consumer sentiment rising, Historically elevated wage growth, new business formation and prime-age worker participation rates. In the last few months we’ve seen some of the most robust real wage growth we’ve seen in decades, and Americans at all income levels have seen size-able increases in their overall net worth. Lowest uninsured rate in history, record ACA signups this year. Renewable and domestic oil production set records in 2023,” https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/stocks-in-record-territory-trump
I notice that WisGOP Hack Schimming made these comments after Vice President Kamala Harris visited Waukesha County to talk about women’s access to proper healthcare. Schimming dismissed women’s concerns – saying the real issue is “inflation.”
Meanwhile President Biden is visiting Superior on Thursday – where the Federal govt is investing $1B and Minnesota and Wisconsin – $400 million each to fix aging Infrastructure to improve commerce and supply chains between Superior and Duluth, Minn. https://www.twincities.com/2024/01/23/on-heels-of-1b-investment-in-new-blatnik-bridge-biden-to-visit-superior-wis-on-thursday/
Hey Brian – with Democrats – life gets better and infrastructure gets fixed for WI residents – unlike the WIGOP Foxconned boondoggle and crap roads and underfunded schools under Walker.

Stevie?… Stevie, have you lost your nerve? A “hmmm”, but no substance?

Perhaps you mean to suggest that there has been a big compositional change in employment has led to a decline in measured productivity? Perhaps you expect a sharp upward revision to GDP, consistent with the rise inthe coincident index?

      Just curious.

“curious but not interesting enough to devote attention to”

Doesn’t that same description fit everything you say CapeCodKopits?? Why do you live in a blue state Steve??—aren’t you afraid “the dirty liberals” are going to run off with your property and savings?!?!?!? You know Massachusetts is like one of the 5 most politically blue states in the nation, right dummy??

then you should have kept quiet on the topics. you are implying innuendo here. do not do so and then act innocent. that is what fools like econned and rick do.

‘Critics and commentators were stunned by Scott’s bootlicking display Tuesday, calling it “painfully embarrassing” and “pathetic.”’

And that was before Uncle Tom Scott kneeled before Trump and shined his shoes.

    2. Moses Herzog

If I could say one thing to Tom Scott you know what it would be??–other than “You are a pathetic little Uncle Tom”—

“Tom, you can be a Christian, or you can be a trump supporter. But you have to choose one or the other. You can’t be a Christian and vote for donald trump, and you can’t vote for donald trump and still be a Christian. Make up your mind Uncle Tom, because all you are right now is an amoral, vapid receptacle. If you intentionally choose to be a conduit for evil, then you can’t claim to be Christian.”

The way Senator Scott kissed up to Trump it with that “I love you” made me wonder if both SC Senators were gay. After all – neither got married.

I guess Christians can be gay in some churches but then Scott is from the South so maybe that’s why he finally got engaged. Just saying!

BTW Trump did testify for 3 minutes in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial. It was quite an embarrassing 3 minutes even for Trump.

I may disagree with Moses on a few things but both of us realize that Senator Tim Scott is seriously out of touch with his fellow black citizens. I decided to check his record and this come up from his early days in the Senate:

The liberal blog ThinkProgress last night highlighted a bill from a group of lawmakers affiliated with the Study Committee, a caucus of conservative House Republicans. The bill reads in part: “no member of a family unit shall participate in the food stamp program at any time that any able-bodied work eligible adult member of such household is on strike as defined in the Labor Management Relations Act.” Calling the provision a “stealth attack against union workers,” ThinkProgress complained that it “would actually cut off all food stamp benefits to any family where one adult member is engaging in a strike against an employer.”

Hey auto workers in South Carolina, attend a UAW meeting and the government will cut off food for your children! MAGA!
